The story of the plant

The story of the plant

Hemp: What you might not know about this special plant:

While you may think of it’s more recreational purposes, for thousands of years, hemp was grown and harvested to play a staple role in the lives of native americans.

It’s a resilient plant that requires little to no pesticides, irrigation, and fertilizer, embodies sustainability and holds immense potential for creating fabrics that are durable, breathable, and environmentally friendly. While the buzz around hemp often centers on its medicinal properties and uses in wellness products like CBD oil, its role in textiles is equally transformative.

It is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet, which allows us to expect a quick harvest season when planting.

For years, hemp faced unjust criminalization in the United States, but the 2018 Farm Bill marked a turning point, legalizing its cultivation and opening doors for American farmers like us. At our clothing company, we're proud to lead by example, sourcing our hemp locally and supporting domestic agriculture. Our commitment extends beyond growing the plant; we oversee every step, from farming to fabric production right here in the U.S.

A plant appreciated by Native Americans:

Indian tribes across the North Americans wove hemp fibers into rope, baskets, clothing, and so much more. With unique strength and durability, Hemp serves as the most versatile plant.

Today, native american reservations have hundreds of thousands of acres rest beneath the sun, perfectly suitable for hemp fields. And in South Dakota, the lands blossom with Hemp.

We plant millions of plants, and the earth blesses us with a large harvest, thanks to the rich soil. The soil is so good, it has brought attention from overseas. Investors and Hemp growers all the way from China have invested into the farming practices on Indigenous reservations.

We just received a delivery for millions of hemp seeds to be planted. We begin planting them this week and will prepare for a large harvest. These ancient plants will then be turned into fiber and thread, suitable for clothing.

Hemp: From Seed to Shirt:

When we take a plant like Hemp, and turn it into shirts, we pay homage to the lands that brought us those fibers. And the people who planted those seeds.

And the sun that grew those plants.

And the nutrients that fed them.

The product created by all those beautiful elements, represents the force of nature.

We take these materials and hand sew them into some of the most comfortable tee shirts you’ve ever worn. You can wear a thom jordan tee shirt for years, and because of the nature of Hemp, it will continue to get softer with time, while staying tough even through your late night gym sesh, wrestling match with your brothers, and the cleansing wash after you spill your tomato sauce down the front.

Harmony:

thom jordan shirts are made to be lived in. Not just for a season, but for a lifetime.

Hemp is one of many gifts the earth has given us, and thom jordan uses that gift as it was intended. Then the simplicity that follows, when you live in harmony with nature, is striking.

Growing hemp isn't just about planting seeds and watching them grow. It’s about connecting deeply with the land and reclaiming a heritage that stretches back through generations of Native American tradition. For us, it starts on our own land, nestled within Native American reservations, where we carefully cultivate hemp plants from seed to harvest.

We have everything we need to live, and thrive, right in front of us…
